Jordyn
Jordyn straightened up before rubbing the small of her back. Washing the dishes was tougher than ever. She wasn’t sure how advanced the pregnancy was. The black apron that covered her from chest to toe gave no clues to her condition. No one knew she was pregnant, and she wanted to keep it that way.
Money was tight. Tips barely paid the rent for the room. The minuscule check she received every week went toward the cost of laundry and toiletries. Food was a luxury. Ramen noodles worked well, easy to prepare and no refrigeration needed. There was no money for prenatal care or vitamins. She worried that the lack of balanced meals and vitamins were bad for the baby. It was the best she could do.
For one whole week Jordyn felt under the weather. Her back and sides ached constantly. Each time she emptied her bladder the burning was unbearable. She knew something was wrong. She ran a temperature but blamed it on the flu or a cold. At least she had the next day off. She knew she would feel better if only she could rest. Exhausted, she fell asleep that night with no problem. Nightmares disturbed the few hours of restless sleep she could get.
A knock at the door early the next morning woke her. She made it to the door to find the owner. “Someone is here to see you Jordyn.”
Only Maddie or Megan would visit me, she thought. The owner left to bring the visitor back to the room. As the door between the diner and storage area opened, Jordyn’s worst nightmare came to fruition. Dominic Meyer walked toward her.
Blood drained from her face as dizziness overwhelmed her. She slammed and locked the door, huddling in a corner, hiding beneath the blanket, heart raw and broken. Why now? The partially healed wounds were still too fresh and raw.
“Please Jordyn, let me in.” His voice was low, close to the door.
“Go back to your fucking job,” she replied. “I’m good.”
“I don’t want to do this here. Please open the door so we can talk.”
“You had months to talk. No phone calls. Nothing. Like I said, go back to your job or your other woman. Something meant more than us.” She shivered miserably beneath the blanket. Cold, clammy sweat covered her body. A groan came as a cramp bit into her belly.
“There is no other woman. Are you ok? Please say something,” he pleaded at the door.
She ignored him, tormented with physical and emotional misery. A gentle knock came at the door then his voice again. A few moments passed in silence. Perhaps he had gone away for good. Then came the click of the key, the doorknob turned, and he was there on the floor with her.
“No, no, no!” she didn’t realize her voice was faint, barely audible in the room's quiet. In her head she had screamed. Dark fuzziness invaded the periphery of her vision. Both hands clutched the ache in her lower abdomen.
He touched her face, frowning with concern.
